NETS-T 1: FACILITATE AND INSPIRE STUDENT LEARNING AND CREATIVITY

teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:
  • promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
  • engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources
  • promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students' conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes
  • model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments.

Reflection: For this standard, I chose to include links to two online programs that I use for my Algebra students. Study Island is a program where the teacher can customize a series of questions for the students to solve in conjunction to the topics of the week. The teacher can track the students progress through the "Classroom Manager" and see which students have mastered the topic and which students still need further work on the topic. The questions on Study Island are all multiple choice. Cognitive Tutor is a program from Carnegie Learning. This program differs from Study Island in the sense that the questions are not multiple choice and require more higher order thinking. The students must set up and solve equations, use step by step procedures to solve problems, or solve complex word problems to complete the question. The downside to Cognitive Tutor is that it is not as flexible as Study Island in the sense that the teacher cannot as easily customize a curriculum around the topic of the week.
